New Brunswick, NJ -- The Rutgers Equine Science Center awarded Doris C. Murphy Scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year to five students, all of whom are animal science majors with a minor in equine science. The students, all New Jersey residents, are in the Class of 2010.

Winners of the $1,000 scholarships to be applied towards tuition are Caitlin Belding of Pilesgrove, Lisa Furbeck of Hamilton, Kathleen Richards of Hainesport, Rachel Waltzer of Cherry Hill and Jennifer L. Woodruff of Franklin.

The Doris C. Murphy Endowed Scholarship in Equine Science was created to honor the memory of a woman who loved animals. Murphy who was born in Jersey City, moved to Dumont and worked for the Ford Motor Company in Newark. She and her husband had no children, and shortly before her death in 1998, she contacted her financial advisor, Kate Sweeney of Smith Barney's downtown New Brunswick office, and expressed her desire to support animal studies.

Sweeney, a Cook College alumna, suggested the equine science program at Rutgers as an appropriate beneficiary. Murphy was also very supportive of women pursuing higher education and the endowed scholarship is offered to women students majoring in Animal Sciences with an equine science interest. The scholarship reflects Doris C. Murphy's love of animals and her deep interest in encouraging young women to complete their academic studies.
